GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION:

The Kyrgyz Republic is located in the eastern half of Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the Southwest and China to the Southeast. It lies on the Great Silk Road at a cultural crossroads, allowing for transportation and economic relations with many countries of the world. As well as important road-routes, Kyrgyzstan has two international, four regional Airports and 19 smaller airfields.

ECONOMIC PROSPECTUS:

Kyrgyzstan’s best known foreign investment project is the US$450 million development of the Kumtor gold mine, one of the largest in the world. Apart from Kumtor, Kyrgyzstan has 65 other areas of potential prospecting interest to gold mines. Gold is just one of various opportunities beckoning foreign investment to the country.

Priority industries also include hydroelectric power. Potential reserves total estimated 170 billion KW/H and Kyrgyzstan is the leading exporter of HEP to Kazakhstan & Uzbekistan. There are untapped gold deposits, coal, aluminum, copper, tungsten, uranium, mercury, tin, marble, granite and salt. Today Kyrgyzstan ranks third world-wide in mercury production, contributing 20% of the overall volume in the world. Kyrgyzstan is the only one country who possesses ferrous ore deposits in Central Asia.

Oil & gas resources are concentrated in the southern part of the republic. They include five oil deposits, two oil & gas deposits and one gas condensate deposit.

WHY INVEST IN KYRGYZSTAN?

The Kyrgyz Government has created a real favourable atmosphere to attract foreign investments to the republic. Today Kyrgyzstan has four operating free Economic Zones. Bishkek, the capital of the country, is one of them with a population of 4.6 million and also a manufacturing

and food-processing centre on a main transportation crossroads. The government has already undertaken huge modernisation & development Projects which are receiving substantial funding from International financial Institutions including the EBRD, World Bank, IFC, TACIS, Asian Development Bank, UNDP and other bilateral sources (Germany, Japan, USA, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, UK, Kuwait & Saudi Arabia).

The Japanese Overseas Economic Co-operation Fund allocated a further credit of 5.25 billion Yen to fund the 2nd phase of the Bishkek to Osh road. The project is co funded by the Asian Dev. Bank. A 5.45 billion-Yen credit has also been made for the reconstruction of Bishkek airport, which was reported a few months ago. The Kyrgyz Government has undertaken construction of 220KV and Rehabilitation of 110 kV Substations in the rural areas of Osh district funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arabic economic development. JSC Kyrgyzenergo intends to pre-qualify contractors for the following works under this project:

-The extension and rehabilitation of 220/110/10kv Alai substation

-The rehabilitation of the 110/35/10kv Batken substation

-The design and construction of new 220/110/10kv Aigul-Tash power station.

FACTS:

Cumulative investments into Kyrgyzstan during the next 10 years are expected to exceed $25bn. The rate of inflation is completely under control and an anticipated economic growth rate of 8.5% is expected in 1999. There are more than 12,000 small & medium sized private enterprises registered in the republic. These companies invested heavily, not only to secure their shares in this lucrative market sector, but also to beat their rivals and for future gains.
